what's your sign baby?

back around sophomore year in high school i became obsessed with astrology and getting a virgo necklace. i don't recall if it was a gift or if i bought it for myself but i finally got a silver pendant engraved with the virgo sign and wore it to death on a cheap black rope choker. this jessica kagan cushman cuff is truly the grown up version of my old fixation.

natasha poly

she's definitely one of the top models of the moment, currently placed at #2 on models.com top 50 female models ranking, above lily donaldson and even agyness deyn. you might recognize her from the past few seasons gucci campaigns, this season's calvin klein, jil sander, blumarine, etc etc. i just think her face, especially her cheekbones, are crazy!

Right off the runway

sometimes show looks are a bit overstyled but these three looks (proenza schouler, jill stuart and alexander wang from top to bottom ) i'd rock just as they are. in my dreams :)

hisham oumlil fashion show

first and only fashion show of this season for this girl :( the madness has been strangely subdued this season, undoubtedly because of the current economic climate. nonetheless, mary, israel and myself managed to have a blast (free cocktails are always a good thing)...and i even managed to score an invite to a front row seat! the only downside to a men's fashion show? a goody bag full of mens beauty products! (a big thank you to mary for takin all the pics!)

Prehistoric Robot Couture

rodarte's fall 2009 collection...i can't even attempt to form sentences so i'm just going to list my notes that i wrote as i drooled watching the slideshow online...
  • fresh palette
  • can see the transition from previous collections but toughened up
  • want to touch and examine up close
  • robots... stone... deconstructed..
  • the gloves!
  • the boots!
  • the gunmetal nail polish!
  • great belts
  • snakeskin accents
these few pics don't even begin to do this collection justice. go to nymag.com and see all the looks here. just stunning.

cold shoulder

major fall 2009 trend: major shoulders. i'm sure the really severe poufs will be watered down a bit for the masses, and with a slim pant it can be quite chic. we all will just have to proceed with caution!

Biker babes

just a few days into fall fashion week 2009, you can see some trends starting to emerge. exhibit a: the biker short. unlike it's early 90's counterpart (the next natural progression from mc hammer pants?), these are done in luxe fabrics that even includes crocodile. i'm gonna get a little crass here, but please forgive me and hear me out- anyone else see these and immediately cringe at the ridiculously high potential for a camel toe situation? eek. plus this type of shorts reminds me of axl rose and how one time he wore WHITE spandex biker shorts to perform on mtv in like 1991 and my next door neighbor heather, who was a few years older than me, was all a-flutter and making a fuss about it and i didn't get it. and she gave me this "you are SUCH a child look" (which killed me because i thought she was the coolest), and said "ohhh just wait! one day you'll understand!" but then when i was old enough to understand i just thought a man in spandex was sort of indecent and gross. let's all pray that this trend doesn't cross over shall we?

wednesday (online) window shopping

water water everywhere and not a drop to drink!
a good friend of mine finds it depressing to window shop online when she can't afford it. maybe it's just the dreamer in me, or maybe i've just learned some self control (insert my mother laughing here), but i sorta dig it when pennies are scarce because it gives me more incentive to get creative with things i have... i'm counting down the days until i go home for a visit and can attack the local salvation army with a mental library of looks i love (nyc "thrift" stores are way overpriced).

b-a-n-a-n-a-s

a $1400 dress with a giant image of a baboon on the front and back?! ummmm, yes please! i just find this uniquely stunning and am actually not surprised in the least that it's already sold out on net-a-porter.com- even with the hefty price tag.

trend tracking

it's pretty interesting when you track a current fashion trend back to its first spotting on the runway. let's take this season's harem pants. these voluminous yet tapered slacks first made their return to the stage all the way back in september 2006, during spring 2007 fashion week when marc jacobs made them a staple in his dreamy, floaty, dessert-hued collection.
initial reactions were actually mostly positive if but also confused:
  • maria palma of therunwayscoop.com loved the monochromatic looks but also commented, "some of the pants in the collection reminded me of the mc hammer pants that I used to wear in high school."
  • WWD also called out the early 90's icon when they stated, "the defining look of this collection, however, was his [marc jacobs] harem pants, which were reminiscent of mc hammer" and defined them as "relaxed yet inventive."
mc hammer, 21st century fashion icon. will wonders never cease.

got to get you into my life

these booties on the left in zara's spring lookbook are amazing...
(wondering if the ones on the right are actually balmain or if zara is doing a knock off pair too!)

Ready for spring

today was an unusually balmy day in nyc. i think we almost hit 50 degrees! in february! inconceivable! sadly temps will most likely be back down to bone chilling soon enough, but today's sunshine got me feeling seriously antsy for the days when i won't need 10 layers for my sunday starbucks runs.
